Overview

Pilosa is a web-based DSAR (Data Subject Access Request) and document redaction platform designed to help organizations securely process, review, and redact sensitive personal data at scale.

The product explores how automation and intelligent tooling can reduce the manual effort, risk, and time involved in compliance workflows — without removing human oversight.

This case study focuses on information hierarchy, workflow design, and trust-driven UX for sensitive legal and compliance tasks.

The Problem

Handling DSAR requests is slow, manual, and error-prone.

Organizations responding to privacy requests often rely on:

  • manual document review

  • copy-paste redaction

  • disconnected tools

  • unclear audit trails

This creates several risks:

  • missed or incorrect redactions

  • inconsistent handling of sensitive data

  • long turnaround times

  • high operational cost

Existing tools are either too technical, too fragmented, or not designed for real compliance workflows.

The Opportunity

There is a clear opportunity to design a focused, purpose-built redaction tool that:

  • supports DSAR workflows end to end

  • automates repetitive redaction tasks

  • keeps humans in control of final decisions

  • provides clarity, traceability, and confidence

  • feels trustworthy and professional

The challenge is designing a system that balances automation with accountability.
